KEDA Sets Aside RM2.5 Million to Build 40 Waste Collection Centres in KEDA Rural Areas
POKOK SENA – The Kedah Regional Development Authority (KEDA) has allocated RM2.5 million for the construction of 40 waste collection houses at KEDA Villages under the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Project in the KEDA Region (SPIKE), which will run from 2023 to 2027.
KEDA Chairman, YBhg. Dato’ Seri Diraja Mahdzir bin Khalid, said the initiative aims to introduce a more organised centralised waste collection system, while also helping to improve cleanliness and the quality of the environment in rural areas.
According to him, the waste management system is implemented based on residents’ consent with a minimal fee, enabling scheduled and continuous operations of garbage trucks.
“To date, 20 KEDA villages have implemented this waste management system, while the remaining villages will be carried out in stages depending on existing infrastructure needs,” he said in his speech during the KEDA Chairman’s Visit Programme with Residents of KEDA Villages Zone 3 Pendang/Pokok Sena at Desa KEDA Bendang Perang, yesterday.
Further elaborating on the project allocation, he explained that in 2023 (Phase 1), RM500,000 was allocated for the construction of 10 waste collection houses, all of which have been fully completed. Meanwhile, for the period from 2025 to 2027, KEDA has allocated an additional RM2 million for the construction of 30 more waste collection houses.
To date, 20 waste collection houses have been completed and launched at KEDA Villages, while the remaining 20 units are expected to be fully completed by 2027.
In the meantime, he expressed hope that the implementation of the SPIKE Project will continue to support the development of villages that are more beautiful, cleaner, and sustainable, in line with KEDA’s aspiration to enhance the well-being of rural communities.
For the record, the Solid Waste Management Project in the KEDA Region (SPIKE) focuses on the construction of solid waste collection centres in rural areas, as well as the development of a more systematic and efficient waste management system in KEDA Villages.
The project allocation covers the construction of waste collection houses, the purchase of RORO bins, as well as operational costs for solid waste management.
In addition, the project also creates opportunities for the B40 group to be directly involved in solid waste management, towards creating a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment.
